Elephant sanctuary programs, one hour from Bangkok

Two ways to spend a morning or an afternoon with Somboon and Nong Lek, our two rescued elephants, on 17 acres of open land in Nong Chok. Round-trip transfer from central Bangkok is included in both, and every group is kept small. There is no riding here, no chains or hooks, and no performances of any kind.

Which programme is right for you?

Both programmes follow the same herd through the same land, and both include everything you need for the day. The difference is how long you stay and how much of the elephants’ daily routine you see. Program A is the short visit for travellers with half a morning free. Program B follows the herd through food preparation and their bath, and is the one most guests choose.

What a visit looks like

Boarding is between 07:30 and 07:50 for the morning session and 12:30 and 12:50 for the afternoon. The drive out to Nong Chok takes between forty-five minutes and an hour depending on traffic, so you are with the elephants by around nine in the morning or two in the afternoon.

Your guide starts with a short briefing — how we care for the herd, how to approach the feeding station, and what the elephants will and will not do. From there you prepare their food and hand-feed them across the rail, then walk beside them as they forage across the land.

On the half-day programme you also mix and roll the elephants’ supplement balls by hand — banana, rice, rice bran, pumpkin, tamarind and a little salt — and the herd eats them the same morning. The visit finishes at the pond, where the elephants take their bath and mud spa while you watch from the bank, and you meet them up close as they come out of the water.

Why you stay on the bank

The pond here has a soft silt bed. An elephant walks through it without thinking; a person sinks. We decided early that no guest goes into that water, and it has turned out to be the right call for the elephants too — they bathe without anyone in the pool with them, and take as long as they want.

You watch from the bank, which is also the best place to photograph them, and meet them properly once they are out.

Common questions

How far is the sanctuary from Bangkok?

We are in Nong Chok, inside Bangkok, about an hour by road from the city centre. That is what makes the 3-hour Program A possible — you can leave after breakfast and be back in the city before lunch.

Can we ride the elephants?

No. There is no riding here, and there never will be. There are also no chains, no hooks and no performances.

Can we bathe with the elephants?

No. The pond bed is soft silt and is not safe for guests, so you watch the bath and mud spa from the bank and meet the elephants up close as they come out. The bath is part of Program B only.

Is it suitable for children?

Yes. Children aged 4 to 11 pay the child rate, and infants under 4 visit free but must be booked together with at least one paying adult.

How many elephants are there?

Two — Somboon, who is 51, and Nong Lek, who is 41. Both are female and both are rescued. Keeping the herd small is what lets us keep the groups small too.
